Can fruit be taken with medications?
In most cases, fruit and medications are compatible, though there are important exceptions to keep in mind. Certain fruits, and particularly their juices, can affect how a drug is absorbed or how strongly it acts in the body.
The most famous example is grapefruit, which can significantly amplify the effects of certain medications. Additionally, some juices hinder the absorption of allergy drugs, while potassium-rich fruits require special care when combined with certain blood pressure medications.
If you take medication, the safest practice is always to wash it down with plain water rather than fruit juice or other beverages.
Why?
Natural compounds found in fruit can influence the enzymes responsible for metabolizing medications in your body. As a result, certain fruits can make a drug work too strongly, while others may weaken its effectiveness. While such interactions are relatively rare, knowing about them is essential if you take medication regularly.
